AfDB Approves US$45 Million Grant for Creation of Pan African University for Science, Technology and Innovation

According to an article published on the African Development Bank(AfDB) website, the AfDB's Board of Executive Directors approved on Wednesday, July 24 an African Development Fund (ADF) grant of US$ 45 million to support the creation of a Pan African University (PAU). The new university consisting of fivePan African Institutes will focus mainly on science, technology and innovation.

The techno-savvy side of Inalegolo

According to an article published on Daily News, the small settlement of Inalegolo in the heart of the Kgalagadi desert appears entirely detached from the cosmopolitan lifestyle. As a remote area, donkeys and horses are the main source of transport through all the four seasons, hot or cold, rain or sunshine. In most cases the sandy dusty settlement looks very lonely and deserted with a few people walking about and livestock loitering around. This may mislead one into believing that this community knows little of communication technology and of course ruling out the existence of a fully-fledged information communication technology service centre. The ICT hub popularly known as Ko Caraveneng is an asbestos walled porta cabin housing a modern day cyber café.

Africa: Tech Cities - Africa's Next Big Thing?

BIG, bold and thinking out of the box!

According to an article published on AllAfrica , one is dubbed ‘Africa's Silicon Savannah', taking a cue, of course, from the Silicon Valley high-tech industry on the west coast of the USA. And the other is still in the form of a plot of land acquired by the Ghanaian tech-businessman, Roland Agambire, already being referred as ‘Hope City'. I call them Africa's next big idea. By way of generalisation, I should add, when it comes to science and technology, this type of thinking - ambitious, risk-taking and out of the box - is uncharted territory for Africa.

World Information Society Day - ICT Brings a Bag of Pros and Cons

The information and telecommunication technology sector is believed to improve business transactions and communication in society, but Rwandans say the new technology tools have been leading to moral degeneration amongst the youth while also promoting theft. Emmanuel Mbonabucya, the project manager of Circuit Power LTD, a company that deals in electronics has been using internet to import generators, air conditioners and fuel dispensing pumps for three years.

Rockerfeller Foundation sets up $100mn fund for digital jobs in Africa

According to an article published on IT WEB AFRICA, international philanthropic organisation the Rockerfeller Foundation announced the launch of a new fund, Digital Jobs Africa, to enable the youth in six African countries to access funds to develop innovative jobs.
 
The seven year programme aims to reach over one million people in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Morocco and Egypt, to develop sustainable jobs.

Orange Botswana sets its sights on helping Africa’s youth through new MDGs

On April 24th, 2013 BizTechAfrica features an interesting article written by John Churu from Gaborone, Botswana.

As the first batch of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) come to a close, Orange Botswana has come with an initiative to make use of the second MDGs differently this time around. The organisation has set its sights on helping Africa’s youth through the MDGs. The organisation has partnered with Youth Alliance for Leadership and Development in Africa (YALDA) and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including the Dutch NGO for the 'Voice Africa's Future' campaign in this regard.
