To Improve African Education, Focus on Technology

According to an article published on Harvard Business Review, Africa is a hopeful continent with an exuberance driven by minerals, hydrocarbon, and commodities. These present drivers of its economy, however, are under threat from technology. Nigeria’s earning from crude oil is dropping because of America’s shale gas renaissance. The long-view trajectory of electric vehicles suggests a future where electrons will power more cars than carbon compounds. Without the ability to create knowledge through quality education, the sustainability of Africa’s new-found optimism remains questionable. Of the 400 top global universities, only three are in Africa.

Nigeria: ICT Will Promote SMEs' Growth, Says Okafor

The Chief Executive Officer of connectnigeria.com, Mr. Emeka Okafor, has declared that Nigeria will witness the growth of many Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the coming years as a result of fast-growing technology in the country.

Okafor, who made the disclosure recently while announcing Nigeria's first ever e-business fair to be hosted by the company, said many businesses would reach vast and diverse markets using electronic and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) tools to leverage their operations.

Innovation Prize for Africa 2014:USD 150 000 Prize for Innovative African Solutions to African Challenges

Prize will be Awarded to Entrepreneurs and Innovators who Deliver Market-oriented Solutions for African Development

The African Innovation Foundation (AIF) announced the call for entries for the 2014 Innovation Prize for Africa (IPA). The prestigious Prize, presented annually since 2012, aims at encouraging innovations that contribute to sustainable development in Africa. The winning submission will be awarded a prize of USD 100’000, with two additional USD 25 000, one for the runner up with an innovation with the best business potential and the other one for the runner up with the innovation with the best social impact.

AllAfrica: 300 Technology Startups Apply to Launch At Demo Africa

A record 300 technology startups from 24 African countries have applied to launch at DEMO Africa Conference, the first Pan-African launch pad for emerging technologies and trends, to be held in Nairobi in October.

 

Speaking after the official closing of the three-moth application period, Harry Hare, the Executive Producer of DEMO Africa noted that 2013 had seen 100 more companies register than in 2012 when 150 startups applied for the top 40 positions to launch at the DEMO Africa stage.

Botswana Speaks online platform goes for a “test drive” with piloting constituencies’ citizens @ Boteti North

The Botswana Speaks Parliamentary Initiative Team at the Parliament of Botswana kicked off a road trip last week to the four piloting constituencies of the project (Nata/Gweta, Boteti North, Maun West, South East South) in order to present the online platform.  Throughout August the citizens of various villages will get the chance to a firsthand experience while they will be informed on how to use it by members of the team along with the assistance of Parliament IT staff.
The Parliament team is going to Boteti North this week.

Here are the venues:

-          Tuesday 6 August: Rakops – Engliton Investments Complex
-          Wednesday 7 August: Moreomaoto – Public Library
-          Thursday 8 August: Mopipi – Marobathutlwa Community Hall

All meetings start at 09:00.

Botswana goes digital

Few students pursue science, technology careers

According to an article published on Daily News, few students show interest in science and technology-based careers, according to the chief research, science and Ttchnology officer, Mr Oabona Monngakgotla.

Speaking at a workshop on principles of intellectual property rights for practical subjects, organised by the Department of Research, Science and Technology in Francistown recently, Mr Monngakgotla said many students considered science a difficult subject and they ended up avoiding science careers.
