Big 7 African telcos enter landmark agreement

As a result of high-level meetings at this year's Mobile World Congress, seven major mobile operators across Africa and the Middle East have developed a roadmap to cooperate on network infrastructure sharing initiatives.
“We are greatly encouraged by the shared vision of mobile operators and the common urgency to find solutions that will drive down the cost of mobile and Internet services and help connect the unconnected,” said Anne Bouverot, Director General, GSMA.

Surging mobile internet demand straining African telecom networks

Telecom companies in the Middle East and Africa could face growing quality of service (QoS) issues in future because of a rise in internet usage fueled by more affordable smart mobile devices.

Mahmoud Samy -- area head Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan at Arbor Networks -- told the Trade Arabia publication that the Mideast and Africa could see a 31% traffic leap on consumer internet by 2017 from a 10% growth level in 2012.

Cognitive computer systems will allow better electronic government services

Existing computing systems in Africa fail to allow electronic government service systems to be citizen-engaged, according to the chief scientist at IBM Africa Dr. Osamuyimen (Uyi) Stewart.

From Nigeria to Rwanda, African nations have started switching on to e-government services in a bid to fast-track processes such as government-to-citizen (G2C) and government-to-business (G2B) processes.

East Africa: Technology Forces That Drive World's Economic Growth

Peter Nalika in his article published on September 25th, 2013 states that the world is rapidly chamging and technology is at the heart of this change. The center of economic world is really moving very quickly, a thousand years ago it was in Central Asia and over the next thousand years it moved west through Europe and since the mid 1980s its been moving back in an accelerating place and by 2025 it will move back to Central Asia, at little north of where it started.

Ethiopia: Ericsson launches school broadband project

Global telecommunication services operator Ericsson has launched a new school broadband project in Ethiopia aimed at boosting Internet services for local schools in an effort to increase infrastructure and services for the younger generation.

It said that it will bring “voice and data communications to the Millennium Village Project (MVP) in Koraro in a remote part of northern Ethiopia as a way of increasing understanding and access to Internet for schools. With access to 3G connectivity more than 4,000 students and their teachers at two schools involved in the Connect To Learn initiative will now have access to modern learning and teaching resources through Ericsson’s cloud-computing platform,” Ericsson said in a statement released on Thursday.

NDB acquires two mobile branches

According to the Daily News, the National Development Bank (NDB) has recently acquired two mobile branches, NDB chief executive officer, Ms Lorato Morapedi, has said.
 
The acquisition, Ms Morapedi said, was meant to increase the bank’s four branches at Gaborone, Palapye, Francistown and Maun.
 
She also added that this was part of the several strategies that NDB had in place to take its services to the people and improve customer service.
