Top 10 internet countries in Africa

Internet access has yet to reach more than 50% of Africans, but the continent’s connectivity levels are nevertheless growing very quickly. US-based networking solutions company Mushroom Networks has compiled a graphic that illustrates Africa’s top ten internet markets. The data has been compiled by various sources including the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and Internet World Stats.

Future networks will cost less than today

According to ItNewsAfrica.com, future networks will cost about half of what traditional networks cost today. They will require a smaller capital investment to roll out, and will be cheaper to operate because they’ll be easier to manage, provide unified access, and require less power and cooling.

Today, most campus networks comprise around 80% wired ports serving individual users, and 20% WLAN ports supporting multiple users. However, there’s a growing swell of users across the globe pushing organisations to create ‘bring your own device’ ready environments, and usher in the enterprise mobility era that will inevitably change the structure of networks.

Botswana’s network readiness index drops

This year’s Global Information Technology Report (GITR) places Botswana at position 96 out of 144 countries on the country’s network readiness index rankings. The country dropped seven places from 89 out of 142 countries last year.
 
Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Nonofo Molefhi said in Gaborone on Thursday at the launch of the GITR of 2013, that the drop should be a major concern for all parties being government, private sector and individuals.
