Africa’s top ten largest mobile markets

According to an article published on IT WEB AFRICA, from 2007 to 2012, Africa’s number of mobile connections more than doubled from 283 million to 735 million, according to global mobile communications industry body the GSMA.

African mobile learning market to see world’s highest growth

The five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the Mobile Learning market in Africa is 38.9%, the highest in the world, according to a new report by Ambient Insight.

The report, "The 2012-2017 Africa Mobile Learning Market", says revenues will grow more than five times to reach $530.1 million by 2017, up from the$102.4 million reached in 2012.

"Seven of the fourteen countries analysed in this region have growth rates above the 38.9% aggregate rate," reports Sam S. Adkins, Chief Research Officer. "We have identified the five major catalysts driving the Mobile Learning market in Africa. Combined, these catalysts have made Africa the most vibrant Mobile Learning market on the planet."

Sub-Saharan Africa to accelerate mobile broadband rollout

The Vice President of Botswana, the Honourable Dr Ponatshego H. Kedikilwe opened a meeting on Friday 06 September of the Governments of Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia to agree common priorities to accelerate the roll out of mobile broadband in the region, with the view of creating an additional 3.2 million jobs for Sub-Saharan Africa by 2020.

Botswana’s internet subscriptions growth tops 132.2%

According to an article published on IT WEB AFRICA, Research from Statistics Botswana (SB), the country’s data authority, has indicated a significant growth in both mobile cellular and internet subscriptions. The ‘Botswana ICT 2012 Statistics’ report, released this week by statistician general Anna Majelantle, says that mobile cellular subscriptions rose from 2,900,263 in 2011 to 3,081,726 in 2012, registering a growth of 6.3%.

How Mobile Phones Are Bringing Change in Governance

According to an article published on engageSPARK, currently, there are as many mobile-cellular subscriptions in the world as there are people, with more than half of the users in the Asia-Pacific region – 3.5 billion of the 6.8 billion total subscriptions (ICT Facts and Figures by International Telecommunication Union ITU). This does not necessarily mean that every person in this world has a mobile phone or that every region has a cellular network. The increase is attributed to the fact that a single user may have more than one device and/or cellular subscription. The study by ITU also points out that the mobile-cellular penetration rate is at 96% in the world; 128% in developed countries, and 89% in developing countries.

Botswana Speaks online platform goes for a “test drive”

Botswana Speaks online platform goes for a “test drive” with piloting constituencies’ citizens @ Nata/Gweta, Boteti North, Maun West, South East South behind the wheel!

The Botswana Speaks Parliamentary Initiative Team at the Parliament of Botswana kicked off a road trip earlier this week to the four piloting constituencies of the project in order to present the online platform.  Throughout August the citizens of various villages will get the chance to a firsthand experience while they will be informed on how to use it by members of the team along with the assistance of Parliament IT staff.


Laptops equipped with internet modems will be provided by Parliament for public use during the Botswana Speaks tour.  Following a brief presentation of the platform and with the assistance of the Parliament team, citizens will be able to use the platform and send messages to their elected representative.

Trips in the piloting constituencies: Citizens get to use the platform

The Botswana Speaks Team at the Parliament of Botswana is going for a trip in the four piloting constituencies of the project. Two members of the team will be going to the various constituencies (different members for each trip), together with an IT Officer who will be going to all of them.

Timeline
The team will spend 5 working days in each of the four piloting constituencies as follows:
•    Nata/Gweta: from Monday 29 July to Friday 2 August
•    Boteti North: from Monday 5 August to Friday 9 August
•    Maun West: from Monday 12 August to Friday 16 August
•    South East South: from Monday 19 August to Friday 23 August

The Parliament will bring laptops with internet modems for the public to use during the meetings. After a quick presentation of the platform, most of the time will be spent on citizens using the platform and sending their questions / concerns to their elective representative with the assistance of the team.

The agenda of the meetings that will be organised this week at Nata/Gweta is as follows:
•    Tuesday 30 July : Nata, Nata Senior School, starting at 09:00
•    Wednesday 31 July: Gweta, Kutlwano Junior Secondary School, starting at 09:00
•    Thursday 1 August: Sowa Town, Joiba Complex, starting at 09:00

Nigeria’s Mobile Teledensity Predicted to Reach 98% in 2015 - Investing and Trading

Orange Botswana sets its sights on helping Africa’s youth through new MDGs

As the first batch of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) come to a close, Orange Botswana has come with an initiative to make use of the second MDGs differently this time around. The organisation has set its sights on helping Africa’s youth through the MDGs. The organisation has partnered with Youth Alliance for Leadership and Development in Africa (YALDA) and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including the Dutch NGO for the 'Voice Africa's Future' campaign in this regard.
