136 Kenyan campuses now connected

According to an article published on BizTechAfrica, the Government of Kenya through the ICT Authority has officially launched a network that connects 136 University Campuses across the country through a $22.5 million grant. The funding, extended by the government in the course of the last five years, was channelled through the Kenya Education Network Trust (KENET), which is a National Research and Education Network set up in 1999 to promote the use of ICT in Teaching, Learning and Research in Higher Education Institutions in Kenya.

Kenya is an ‘overachiever’ with regard to using the internet while South Africa is ranked among the world’s top five emerging nations with the highest levels of access to the web.

This is according to the Web Index 2013, which has been conducted by the World Wide Web Foundation and measures the web’s growth, utility and impact on people and nations. Key global findings of the report include that Sweden and Norway are the world’s two top performing countries overall in this year’s web index, as almost 95% of people in these countries are online.

According to an article published on AllAfrica Global Media, Africa's rapid adoption of internet technology and solutions is increasingly contributing to the growth of economies across the continent, with Kenya among the leading countries reaping from the internet.

Kenya marginally trails Senegal in the internet's contribution to GDP, according to research by McKinsey. The report titled Lions go digital, shows the internet contributed 2.9 percent to Kenya's Gross Domestic Product while Senegal led the pack with 3.3 percent of its economy benefiting from the Internet.

Kenya’s government last week announced that it has extended submissions for a primary schools laptop tender project to Thursday this week.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially opened the first commercial technology research facility in Africa at an inauguration ceremony in Nairobi. The facility is IBM's 12th global research lab, and is supported in Kenya by the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology through the Kenya ICT Authority and located at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. 

The research lab will conduct applied and far-reaching exploratory research into the grand challenges of the African continent by delivering commercially-viable innovations that impact people's lives.

The East African Communications Organisations (EACO) Congress and Exhibition is taking place in Nairobi, Kenya at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre.The Congress is the highest decision making organ of EACO held on an annual basis on a rotational basis among the five East African member States.
