The ICT for Development (ICT4D) conference organised by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) kicked off on March 25th, 2014 in Nairobi, the second time the meeting comes to Kenya. The theme of the 4-day meeting is "Building Resilience through Innovation."

The conference was aimed at showcasing the use of ICT in relief and development efforts and will focus on the ways in which technology enables resilience by supporting developing communities to reduce vulnerabilities and coming up with ways that promote the health and well-being of its members.

According to an article published on allAfrica.com, Google, Friday, announced that three Nigerians were part of the top 10 finalists in its Google "Africa Connected" Competition.

In a statement, Google said that the three Nigerian finalists were Eric Obuh, a social crusader; Eseoghene Odiete, a fashion designer; and Mayowa Adegbile, a philanthropist.

The organisation said that the top 10 finalists also include two Kenyans, a Senegalese, a South African, a Zimbabwean and a Ghanaian.

According to an article published on IT NEWS AFRICA, the UN Economic Commission for Africa in collaboration with the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria through the Ministry of Communications Technology (FMCT), and Ministry of Science and Technology (FMST) will hold a high level policy dialogue on the theme: Science, Technology, and Innovation and the African Transformation Agenda, on 24-25 March 2014 in Abuja.

According to an article published on SciDev.Net, for scientists across Europe, last month marked the official start of a fresh wave of funding opportunities from the European Union (EU). On 11 December, the European Commission finally released the detailed topics and budgets available for the first two years of Horizon 2020, the EU’s eighth research and innovation funding package, worth nearly €80 billion (around US$110 billion) in total from 2014 to 2020.

An article published on IT News Africa website reports on RapidSMS, a mobile innovation developed by two United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) employees that two years after its introduction, continues to bring about significant change in key regions throughout Africa.

When in 2009 Christopher Fabian and Erica Kochi, two employees of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), developed RapidSMS, a platform for data gathering and group communication using the short messaging system (SMS) on mobile phones, their aim was simply to tackle the problem of slow data transmission within the food security surveillance system in Malawi. Four years later, RapidSMS is touching the lives of millions in many African countries, helping to record births and monitor distribution of mosquito nets in Nigeria, monitor neonatal health in Zambia and track food distribution in the Horn of Africa, among other uses.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially opened the first commercial technology research facility in Africa at an inauguration ceremony in Nairobi. The facility is IBM's 12th global research lab, and is supported in Kenya by the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology through the Kenya ICT Authority and located at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. 

The research lab will conduct applied and far-reaching exploratory research into the grand challenges of the African continent by delivering commercially-viable innovations that impact people's lives.

According to the article published in Biztech Africa website, Microsoft Corp. has announced strategic cooperation agreements with three incubator organizations across the African continent to enable startups, innovators and Africa’s developer community to grow their skills and build businesses with Microsoft technologies. Under the Microsoft 4Afrika initiative, Microsoft has entered into agreements with CcHUB in Nigeria, DTBi in Tanzania and AfriLabs, the pan-African hub network.

At the 3rd Annual Wired Women Conference, entitled Leadership & Innovation in the Digital Economy, hosted by Qualitylife in Johannesburg on 15 October, speakers raised several issues related to innovation and leadership, such as African women and the youth taking on the role as ‘agents of change’ through technology and innovation, creating a culture of innovation, technology being used to improve customer experience and the relevance of social media to leadership.
